The name Houston is came from Samuel Houston, the one of the most important personality in the history of Texas, president of the Republic of Texas and being the Governor of Texas. Houston County is belong to the forty-six counties in the state of Texas that is banned for alcohol until the special election came and authorized the selling of alcohols in the county in November 2007. Houston County was established under the 9-year Republic of Texas in June 12, 1837. Houston County carries no commitments with the city of Houston that is found nearly 150 miles to the south of Harris County. The historical museum of the county is found in the previous railroad depot in south Crockett. As of the U.S. Statistical studies the county had a complete area of 1,237 square miles in which the land is 1,231 square miles, and 6 square miles of it is water, 8,259 households, and 5,756 families. The population density was 19 people in every square mile. There are 10,730 housing units with average density of 9 in every square mile. The hereditary makeup of the county was 68.57% White, 27.93% is Black or African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 2.17 % form different nationality, and 0.76% from two or more nationality. Hispanic or Latino is 7.50 % of the population.
