The community of Porter is an unorganized place in the county of Montgomery, Texas which is inside the urban area of Houston Sugar Land Baytown. In the year 1980, it is said to have an approximate population of 8,000. The community was established in the year 1878 during the laying of tracks of what is presently known as the East-West Transportation Company or HEW. Some of the more humorous residents jokingly called it the “Hell Either Way Railroad”. Later, the tracks were sold to Union Pacific and James H. Porter who came from Missouri was the one tasked to manage the switch for the HEW. In the year 1880, Mr. Porter founded a sawmill and named it Porters Mill. A post office was founded near the sawmill, and the Postal Authorities named the place “Porters”. However, later a few years Mr. Porter sold the sawmill and went to Graham, Texas. Afterward, the Post Office decided to drop the “s” and just called it “Porter”. It had become the capital of county of Montgomery from the years 1896 until 1915 but was ordered by the Federal Authorities to transfer the capital of county to its center to acquire an equal access. Today, the community has several businesses and there are also schools that were founded within the area.
